This little amp is extremely versatile despite it’s simple one channel, volume and tone control. It is one of the best sounding clean/edge of breakup amps we’ve had the pleasure to try.
It stands out with its abundance of definition and articulation. On cleaner settings the tone control on full is actually overkill and you have to back it up a bit to get to a usable range.
What is great about this is that you will never left with the feeling as with many other amps – that it would sound perfect, only if you could dial in a bit more detail. We haven’t seen another amp that can be so articulate on really clean settings – usually you have to crank them up to get this touch sensitive and lively response, which is also the point where you lose cleans.
In the crunch settings it has a gnarly character, lots of gain on tap and it will cover classic rock territory easily without boosts or pedals.
The amp was tracked through its 1X12 cab with a the Mojo BV-25M Speaker, 2X Royer R121, 1X Beyerdynamic M16 and 1X Neumann U87 mics.

A little amp but so good
This really a beautiful sounding amp for crisp articulated cleans and it can do crunch too. Nice! Well captured!
Great as always
I have been lax in reviewing Amalgam I have a number of their Quad Cortex captures. I normally go for Vintage and Hard to find stuff. This sort of fits both. All the captures are great. It will cover classic rock and so much more.
One of the best so far
I've purchased 32 of the QC packs that Amalgam has to offer so far (which are all amazing), and this one is worth the clean tone alone. Probably sat and just played guitar for nearly two hours with the Clean Warm 2 Cab capture alone, and the lead capture is full of drive and dirt, yet mid range clarity and high end chime for days. I can't recommend this pack highly enough.
Warm tones, it's the real deal!
I used to have the little Swart amp, loved it but eventually sold it. The Essential Swart ATS sounds as good if not better than my old amp. The clean tones are very warm and if you bump up the gain it can really pump it out. Five stars for sure.
Another Great Amp!
I’m using Tonex mainly for studio recordings, so that perspective applies here. This is now one of my favorite amps for cleans and crunch. Lots of detail in complex chords, and it responds to fingers nicely. Provides a great glassy tone with a Strat. The selection of included captures is so diverse you can easily dial in just about any tone or genre you want (except hi-gain metal death music). I tried it with a few external pedals (Klon clone, compressor, germanium fuzz, midi-based wah) and they all responded nicely. This amp is a true workhorse.
Smooth edge of breakup and heavenly cleans
I'll be honest. I didn't know this amp. I tried the free capture on ToneNet and loved the clean tone on it. I purchased the pack and went through the captures. I'm enjoying the smooth and articulate edge of breakup tones. But for me where this amp shines are the clean tones. Crystal and clear cleans that can make for fantastic pedal platform. I can see this amp being the starting point for ambient or worship style signal chains.
AMAZING cleans and break-up
The clean and edge tones captures of this amp are fantastic. I don't have the greatest guitar in the world (Epiphone - Casino Worn), and the stock pickups have a tendency to sound a little muddy at times, but this amp helps tremendously with that. I feel it offers a ton of definition, articulation, clarity, etc. Will probably be my go-to for clean tones, especially in a denser mix. Highly recommended!
