Although many know the more prominent MRSH version of this amp, the WTKN DOM holds its own and does have a distinctly ddifferent sound. It is very mid focussed, it has less low end and that works marvelously in favor of the other frequencies in the amp and especially on the crunch and higher gain settings.

 

It does not flub out and puts the frquencies that count most for guitar right upfront. It has some of the EL84 sizzle, but always in a very musical way and retains a nice, punchy and smooth character that can be dialed on for more edgy tones towards the end of the gain knob or when pushed with a boost and/or drive pedals.

 

Speaking of pedals and boosts – this one takes them phenomenally well, while giving them its signature character.

 

The amp was tracked through the built in 2X10 Elac speakers, 2X Royer R121, 1X Beyerdynamic M16 and 1X Neumann U87 mics.

Great cleans and breakup tones with a vintage vibe

Amalgam's capture library certainly nails the classics, but the coolest thing about their selection of amps are some of the either rare boutique or vintage off-the-beaten-path options. I actually hadn't heard of this amp, but the free capture on ToneNET grabbed my attention. If you're a fan Vox AC30's, that's a decent starting point for what you might expect (which makes sense, since EL84's are involved), but it is it's own thing. Some of the AMG captures are quite dark/bassy, so this amp offers a nice vintage-y clean that trades some of that low end for added clarity. Between this amp, the actual AC30/AC50, and the Selmer, we have so many great choices for that Brit-clean/jangle sound. I seriously need a Tonex Pedal with about 500 more preset slots...

Loving these smaller vintage combos

This amp is great from clean to cranked. It's super fun to play, sounds killer, but what I like most about it is how well it sits in a mix. It's focused and cuts through in all the right ways. If you're into the smaller combos (or even if you're not), this is definitely worth picking up. If you're new to Amalgam, all their captures are fantastic and the best on the market. As always with Amalgam, 5 stars - highly recommended!
