MRSH SB100 1968

MRSH SB100 1968

Price range: 15.00 € through 18.00 €

This is it, this is THE tone of so many rock guitar records that it is futile to list them. One could consider the 68 Super Bass and Super Lead amps to be the ones that are most associated with the term “plexi” and are the archetypical Marshall sound that so many have in their mind.

It instantly became our favorite for crunch and rock riffs, but it also has really nice cleanish tones on the menu. It is the first Marshall i’ve tried that actually does sound great on the “everyhting on 10” setting (well, almost everything – presence and volume have to be kept to 9 max, otherwise it starts to cave in). So these amps have definitely contributed to that approach.

Tom Bukovac (arguable one of the best guitarists on the planet right now) conisders the 68 laydown transformer Super Bass to be the best of all Marshalls and quotes Eric Johnson agreeing on that. I think we won’t argue with those guys .

This is the amp for Band of Gypsys era Hendrix, for most of the 70’s Led Zeppelin live stuff, early ZZ-Top, AC/DC (Malcolm Young), Eric Johnson and countless others.

The set consists of 18 AMP+CAB Tone Models ranging from Clean to Lead and featuring various EQ settings. Please refer to the full list of captures unter the product pictures.

The capture levels are set for vintage single coils, for humbuckers and other stronger output pickups you need to increase the input gain accordingly, which can be anywhere between 4dB and 10dB depending on your guitar.

Another essential amp

Bought this partly as wanted it for a two amp preset with a Diezel VH4 to try to get the Adam Jones from Tool sound. Sadly I haven't got a decent VH4 capture yet (please Karlis do one soon - Tool fans are waiting with credit cards!!!) but actually I found it's great for Led Zeppelin sounds. Ran through a few bars of Heartbreaker with the crunch setting and it just has that lower mid weight to it that the SL100 doesn't have (much as it's another one you should get). Has nice clean sounds and takes pedals like a champ too. Buy it already :)

My favourite Tonex sounds

Love this one, I use captures from this live, clean crunch and lead. It has a really nice balance, bit fatter in the lower mids but still with the classic marshall upper mid bite. They are really dynamic too and I can get pretty clean to full roar just my controlling picking. This was the point the Tonex surpassed my Kemper.

Serious upgrade for the Tonex Pedal

I bought the tonex pedal for my live rig but was a bit underwhelmed by the plexi sounds that came with it. Did a bit of googling and Amalgam came up as the best of the aftermarket suppliers. I tried a few and they were clearly excellent but the 1968 was my favourite. Fatter and fuzzier than the 69 it works perfectly with my p90 loaded les paul. The edge of breakup profile has become my go to for live and recording. I would recommend to anyone looking for an update to their Tonex

Sounds Huge

I’m primarily a Sunday morning player and usually play in another guitars player. The other guy was using a profile of this amp on his Kemper. It sounded so huge compared to the capture I had been using in my QC. I asked what profile he was using and he told it was from Amalgam Audio. I was very excited to find that they make QC captures as well. This amp sounds huge! Loads of low end and top end that I had been missing from other captures I was using.

Ac/dc and classic rock live here

This is a nice capture series for 60’s, 70’s and 80’s classic rock. Pretty much all the classic Marshall tones can be coaxed from this one.

One capture to rule them all

I almost sold my tonex because I couldn't get it sound how I wanted. I was recommended Amalgam and that changed everything. I purchased 5 packs. All sound good but to be honest I've only played with the other 4. This one is all I need. From within the pack I'm only using 1 capture but at 3 different gain levels. That and hit it with a tubescreamer for solos and that is all i need. I did my first gig with it last week. I have a radio system so went out to the front during sound check and the sound coming through the pa was exactly the sound in my head. I've never owned a superbass but I have owned a bluesbreaker and a JMP1 midi system (through a valve powerstage) back in the day so I have in my head what I want a marshall sounds like. I also have in my head the sound and feel that I want when I'm playing. This does all of it. I can't use amps anymore because my back is shot. I tried helix which is good but was never quite there for me and I spent so much time fiddling. I have 3 live sounds set up now and have no need or desire to do any fiddling. Great captures - if you like the sound of old marshalls I don't think it gets any better than this.

That Marshall Sound We Love

I am very impressed with these captures of the Marshall SB100. Although I have never played a SB100, I have watched some quality videos of these and am familiar enough with what the tones are like. These captures do not disappoint. It is very easy to dial in classic Marshall tones with these captures. They are also very responsive to volume control and pick attack - Les Paul, Strat and Telecaster.

Your new daily driver...that rocks!

Of all the captures I've bought, this one is the most near and dear to my heart - need gritty, edge of breakup tones with some girth? They're here. Crunching power chords? Easy. All-out classic rock muscle? Turn up your guitar volume and hang on...AND you can do all of the above from the Dimed capture alone, with judicious use of your volume knob! The beauty of this amp is its dynamic range, which is absolutely unmatched. A true gem...buy this and start your classic rock band tomorrow, because, sonically speaking, this might be all you need.

Classic Marshall Tone

Really warm presets that respond very dynamically to your volume control. A lot of classic rock sounds can be replicated using these presets. Sounds great with single coils and humbucker guitars.

The Number of the Beast

I plugged into this profile, gained it up, played the intro to that classic Iron Maiden song and started crying tears of joy.

By far the best captures for Tonex

Amalgam captures are astonishingly good. I went through almost everything in tone net, both paid and free stuff, but Amalgam captures are simply the best. This SB100 can cover all sorts of rock music. The way they select the actual tones is great. All captures are useful and the slight nuances allow them to be used for different guitars and situations. Since the beginning I found the level of realism in Tonex excellent, but with Amalgam captures I am simply blown away.

Instant classic for Hendrix and Frusciante Tones

As always great captures with the special bit of greatness, that most amalgam captures have. Played some Hendrix and Chili Peppers with it and was instantly hooked. A good silver jubilee capture would be nice. Keep the coming

One of the best Marshalls made

This is the ticket to Malcolm Young sound! Great clean tones, heavenly drive tones and also works as a great pedal platform. The clean tone can be described as being close to the Under the Bridge intro. I think Superbass is the secret ingredient to Frusciante's tone in addition to the Silver Jubilee,

Full-rig caps are AWESOME! This one is primo A+++ 5 star top-notch tasty

LOVING this run of classic amp full-rig captures. WOW. This is a beastly monster; thick, juicy tones that really come across as playing the real amp- the response and tone of the full-rig capture is hands-down the way to go. VERY impressive.

Everything Marshall

This amp is unbelievable. This amp can do everything thing from Little Wing cleans to Back In Black crunch to Kickstart My Heart high gain tones. It is at the moment my favourite Amalgamaudio capture for high gain tones. I use the Dimed Bright capture with a SD-1 or Tube Screamer in the front and get the most amazing tone for hard, heavy riffs and soaring solos. Definitely a must have capture pack.

Bloody unbelievable

I have bought a few captures from this site before. All were great, the two rock in particularly is a central part of my gigging tone. This amp however is by far the most fun I've had on the quad cortex. I grew up adoring blues rock/classic rock and this amp has it in abundance. I'm not paid to review these things in any way I promise - but if you've gone to the hassle and expense of buying a quad cortex without buying any captures from this gentleman, then you're insane. Buy it if you like rock. Reckon I'll leave it there

Vintage Rock Tones Out the Wazoo

Hendrix's Band of Gypsies album is one of my all-time favorites, so I had to have this set of captures. I use Tonex for studio recording instead of mic'ing amps, and the Super Bass is perfect for vintage rock tones. Perfect for live gigs, too! The included assortment of captures will go from harmonically-rich cleans to singing lead tones, with a wide and flexible range of crunch tones. Highly recommended!
