MTCH PHNX

MTCH PHNX

Price range: 15.00 € through 18.00 €

MTCH almost single-handedly started the boutique tube amp market in late 1980’s / early 1990’s with their take on a British EL84 tube based classic. Since then there have been created a number of models by the manufacturer. The PHNX is in our view a special piece. It is a cross between a copper panel style amp and a plexi style amp. The EL34 output section and other tweaks solve the issues of the classic British amp. Even into higher gain settings the amp is percussive, punchy and holds together beautifully, while it exhibits some of the most beautiful rock tones available. It indeed does combine best traits of the copper and plexi panel amps.

This DI capture set includes 45 captures of Channel I and Channel II, the higher gain captures feature a KLN clone, a vintage BSB pedal, a vintage white face rodent, an 808 overdrive as well as two tube based pedals – MIN and PAG by a Canadian company.

Great sound and feel with one glaring issue.

I'm very happy with the tones this set is capable of and they feel great under the fingers - among the best of the many I've tried. Unfortunately , the Edge captures are VERY close gain-wise to the Clean, leaving a large gap between Edge and Crunch. Frustrating.

Home base

This capture is my latest go-to. Not as chimey as the AC30 and not as “steely” as the HC30, it’s a sort of chameleon that can morph into a number of styles. It’s the first capture that made me seriously want the physical amp it’s based on. The two channels are unique. Channel 2 has a rawness that works great for garage and dirty blues. Channel 1 has the fidelity to do sparkly indie up to rockin’ rhythms.

This is the best and my favourite amp from Amalgam

Hi, I have 90% of the capturs from Amalgam Audio. I also have everything pack from Tone J for Kemper and Quad, some from Michael B. and some from Bert M. I prefer capturs with a guitar cabinet as close as possible to the natural, non-invasive sound straight from the microphones. The latest esential capturs from Amalgam are simply brilliant. Matchless Phonenix and Mesa Mark IV are my favorites. I like simple sounds with a bit of reverb and compressor. You can feel that it is a guitar combo with one 112 speaker or a guitar cabinet with 412 speakers. You get a round guitar treble with the natural expected bass, and what distinguishes each amplifier is the midrange, which is preserved fantastically depending on the amplifier. Captures are made in a very modern way, similar to York audio (guitar speakers). The bass and treble are not cut out immediately for the studio mix, but are left naturally like a real boost. If you want the best possible reproduction of your amplifier and your own live or studio processing, Amalgam captors are just for you. I already have my favorite amplifiers, but I still buy everything Amalgam puts out. I recommend Amalgam whenever and wherever I can. Worth the price.

One of my favorite packs so far

I've now purchased 26 QC packs from Amalgam, this is probably my favorite. The way it responds to picking dynamics is incredible.

Quality captures

I wanted to try something different with this amp that I haven’t never tried before. I like this amp for ambient clean sounds and for blues, pop and pop-rock genres. For me it’s quite low gain (even boosted with pedals) and has not enough gain for my Classic / Hard-rock needs. I would describe this amp as dynamic, soft and ”wide” sounding and it has its own thing going on. Great quality captures if you’re looking for this specific Matchless sound!

Different kind of beast

It took me a while to get what I wanted from this. Patience paid off. Get some good chime and grit combined. Doesn't sound like any other amp. Very cool

Quite Surprised

I did not know this amp before I went nut and bought almost all of amalgam's capture. Glad I did. I was expecting something more bassy and hard to play, but it is quite the opposite. I used the IR from the Marshall series as I've found that it suits better the amp than the original cab. Well done!

Upgrade for the Quad Cortex

Very colorful and great sounding tones. I tried the free captures from amalgamaudio and was hooked right from the start. I‘ve been using the Quad Cortex for one year now and those captures came along at the right time, as I‘m starting to rebuild my set of tones for my band‘s setlist. These captures will be used a lot for that purpose - period!
