MAGN 231 1957

This little MAGN amp has been brought to fame mainly by PhilX in many of his spectacular vintage guitar demos, where it is one of the mainstays in the studio. He has been quoting Eddie Van Halen as one of its users, who supposedly had stashed away many of them in his garage.

 

The amp does beautiful round and almost jazzy cleans, great edge of breakup tones and it crunches up really nicely with a very musical edge.

 

By nature it is on the darker side and therefore we included captures that feature an EQ pedal in front of it to simulate a bright cap, which it does not have.

 

For the darker sounding captures i highly recommend giving the ToneX EQ a go – the treble knob will work wonders (you can apply it graciously) and you can dial in the tone to your needs perfectly without destroying the tone.

 

It takes pedals easily and plexi territory sounds are readily available on it when pushed by them.

 

The amp was tracked through the built in 12″ Utah speaker, the mics used are 2X Royer R121, 1X Beyerdynamic M160 and 1X Neumann U87.
