VX TB30 1964

VX TB30 1964

Price range: 15.00 € through 35.00 €

This British 30W class AB amp is one of the 3 most iconic amp models of the FMV trinity.

This particular specimen is a panel integrated TB with the copper panel, of which only about 50 have ever been made in a head format and it is a particularily musical sounding unit, which can give any plexi a scare.

Due to the lack of negative feedback, cathode bias and the EL84 power section it has a very unique character. It is cutting, raw, a bit light on bass, while it creates a beautifully compressed, detailed and yet quite smooth overdrive tone when cranked hard. It goes from that signature chimey clean tone up to a hot overdrive tone, which retains more detail and string separation than some of the big bottle amps.

It has a somewhat quirky but quite versatile tone stack, where the ability to cut down the bass response comes in very handy, if you want to really crank the amp into natural overdrive without pedals.

Some of the countless users of the TB30 are: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page), Radiohead, Rory Gallagher, Queen (Brian May), John Schofield, U2 (The Edge), Oasis, Foo Fighters, Ritchie Blackmore, Anna Calvi, Mark Knopfler, Hank Marvin, Muse and many, many more.

We prefer this amp with EH power tubes and NOS mullard preamp tubes.

The DI capture set includes 43 captures of the Briliant and the Normal channel and the following pedals for the lead gain level: BSB, 808, RAT, PAG, MIN and a KLN clone. Included are also 3 IR’s of the vintage 2×12 VX cab featuring original silver Alnico speakers.

  • 4x EL84
  • 5x 12AX7
  • 1x 12AU7
  • 1x GZ34
  • Cathode Bias
  • No Negative Feedback loop
  • Tube Rectifier
  • 30W output

Ouch !

I can't stop playing this one with my P90 SG and my tele, i love the crunch tones, they are a wonderful dynamic mix of clean and compressed crunch, at the touch of the pick ! Cleans and drive are also top class, but the crunches are my ballpark...

More spakle - but better than V1?

I´m using the V1 Versions + the DI Versions with York Audio IR`s a lot and tried a lot to get a U2 The Edge tone, but there was always something missing. The warm settings for Strat sounded a bit muffled and had not enough headroom with boost pedals in front of the tonex. The Version V2 have got the Sparkle in the highs, but sound overall very bright, to bright to my ears with these speakers. It would need a Hig/lowpassfilter in the IR Section of Tonex. I´m waiting for the DI Version to use it with the perfect IR.

Different to V1 - but better?

I bought the V1 Version first, then the D1 and was never really satisfied, the Edge-Captures hat not much headroom, also with good IR´s (York Audio) were highs and sparkle missing. The V2 Versions have got that sparkle, aber also very bright, also in the warm settings. I don´t like the Speakers, I´m waiting for the DI version.

This has become my one and only! 7 stars!

Ive been playng this set of captures for over a year and a half. For my taste this is the absolute best I've played. I bought A LOT of captures, from Amalgam Audio. And some from other sellers. This AC30 is on top of my list by far. This does not mean that the other captures are bad or less quality!! Absolutely not! AA is for me the top capturer out there! Whatever you get is top notch for sure! But for me this AC30 is unreachable. I've been playing this one exclusively for the last 8 months al least. And I really have a lot of captures by AA! But I always come back to this for recording, practicing, jamming. I'll be trying V2, as well, that's for damn sure. But can it outplay this one? Time will tell... ;) Good job guys! Huge fan here!

Really loved it!

The V2 is amazing, you guys did a wonderful job, the cleans with a Gretsch are a match made in Heaven, chime and sparkle for days (this is also a suggestion for the next videos: Fabian would surely sound killer with a Gretsch).

Much improved in V2!

The Amalgam capture library is outstanding throughout, but the original AC30 capture, along with the Super Reverb and a few others were created based on the techniques and processes available at that time. While usable (and still better than first-party Tonex stuff), they were not my favorite option for Vox sounds. I actually preferred the Z80, Morgan, and Matchless captures for that type of sound. Now that I've tried the V2 captures of the AC30, that is no longer the case. This version somehow has both a fuller sound and more dynamic "sparkle" than the V1 captures. As it is such a critical amp, I was happy to purchase the reissued version, even if I understand why many would balk at the thought of paid "upgrades" for all of their purchases. Not only are the V2 captures better-sounding, but there are twice as many offered (now 30). These range from many flavors of pristine cleans to "edge of breakup" and fully-driven tones. This AC30 pack is also unique in the selection of drive pedals that pair famously well with that amp, including the Rangemaster Treble Booster, Crowther Hot Cake, and Deluxe Memory Man (preamp). This is an excellent pack that well reflects classic sounds I associate with the Vox AC30, and I will use it a ton.

Best Vox

I have a bunch of other ITB Vox amps and none of them scratch that Vox itch. V 1 was good but I never found a use for it. V2 is the first ITB AC30 that blew me away. Cleans have a clear articulate top chime. Mids are powerful and the low end is tight. Driving the amp with the bridge pickup in my AM Pro II Strat, I was in AC30 heaven. Killer captures!

So real and royal

The sound of Queen under your fingers… so dynamic and so… royal! And there’s so much more: the chime of the cleans, the grit of the breakups, the classic brit crunch: anything you love about the Vox sound is here. And for extra deepness, you could try the AC50.

Best AC30

Hands down, best vox tones I've played in the Quad. Chimey, crunchy, punch factory by itself, and with a rat on top? Forget it.

A No Brainer!

The Vox AC30 is my favorite amp and have bought many plugins over the years to emulate it. They have all gotten pretty darn close and I was happy with them. The only problem I found was when I would crank them up there was always something weird about the tone that didn't nail the sound until I picked up this pack. It instantly gave me amazing tone! It has all the cliche words you find on forums like jangle, bite, grit, warmth, and vibe. I sent a demo of a song to my buddy and he sent me text after text about how great the guitar tones are. I hadn't done any eq or anything. Just straight guitar sounds. This is easily the best $25 (CDN) I've ever spent and would recommend it to everyone!

The best AC30TB Capture

I've tried many AC30TB captures and have found these to simply be the best. They have a perfect blend of chime, grit, and compression. The highs are clear without being pronounced or overdone.

Hhhhhhhmnmmmmmmm GOOD!

After trying 7 or so free and paid captures, there was simply no comparison. The Amalgam Vox AC30 is head and shoulders above all the others, and uniquely feels and sounds “real!” Wow! I am really happy with this incredible Tonex capture. It’s worth every penny I spent.

Mario

Best AC30 Capture on the market.

THIS is the Vox sound! Better than everything else I heard captured and even modelled on the QC or FM3. Absolutely insane. The IRs fit very well too. Normally I use other IRs but not with this captures. Its chimey, middy, and open. The edge of breakup sounds are really special. And the good thing is, this captures react to boosts really well!!

Excellent!

I've tried every Vox amp sim I could find and was always disappointed. In fact, I was disappointed by nearly all amp sims until I discovered Amalgam. These captures genuinely sound like a well-mic'd and dialed-in amp and respond exactly how a real amp does. I have both the core and expansion sets for five of the NAM amps and love them all. I highly recommend anything by Amalgam- excellent quality, care, and consideration go into these captures. I hope we'll soon see NAM captures for some of the amps recently released for ToneX and QUAD, like the tweed and supro. I'd also love a bass amp or two! I love what Amalgam is doing, will spread the word, and look forward to all new NAM releases - thank you!

Go-to Vox tones for ToneX

This capture is amazing! So far I couldn't find comparable AC30 tones for Tonex with this level of accuracy and response. From glassy cleans to cutting leads, all beautiful tones! Awesome job, guys! Thanks for sharing these! Keep up the good work!

The holy grail...

So this is a capture set of the mighty VOX AC30, one of the worlds most famous guitar amplifiers, and one of the first amps that would get a place if the rock'n'roll hall of fame had a departement for guitar amps. And the one that is captured here is even a 1964 copper panel head - the holiest of grails for many guitarists. So how does the capture set compare to a real AC30? I haven't got one here. But I actually have played a Ceriatone DC30 for many years, and that's quite comparable, as it's a clone of the Matchless DC30, wich again is based on the AC30 and AC15. Also, once I borrowed a 60's AC30 from a friend, and that's when I got hooked on the VOX sound. Had it for a while, and was heartbroken when I delivered it back... I find this set to sound exactly as I would expect (and my expectations are high, having tried many of Amalgams free offerings, plus owning a few of the full packs.). It's all there, to my ears: The gorgeous cleans, the chime, the jangle, the rich overdrive. And man, how I have missed those tones when recording guitar at home: Every time I tried a vox emulation, they failed to get the vibe, especially when going into the more driven tones, it just got harsh very quick. But no more of that! I have claimed in other reviews, that NAM captures sound way better than coded vst amps. And that is especially true here. These captures gets it right, and that is through all the range of gain and EQ settings. With both core and extended sets, there are a lot of EQ options from the top boost channel. You also get a few captures from the normal channel across the same gain range, and some captures driven with pedals for even more overdrive and lead tones. I have played this with various VOX cabs in Two-Notes Wall of Sound, and they all work very well. I have not tested that many pedal captures with it yet. Vox amps are known to be a bit difficult to use with pedals, and this might be true for these captures too, but I did try captures of a distortion+, Benson preamp, and a bluesbreaker, and that worked well. I suspect that pedals with a pronounced mid hump, like tube screamers, may not be the best choice for the VOX, and fuzz likewise. But these set have enough tones by themselves, so that won't be a problem. Now there are a few free VOX captures on Tonehunt, and some of them are quite good. I took a track in a mix I was working on, wich had an AC15 capture on it, copied it, and put this AC30 on the copy, both running into the same WoS cab. When i heard these tracks in solo, they were quite similar. But the way the AC30 just sat better in the mix compared to the first track was a very clear. Of course, Amalgams AC30 is a vintage 60's VOX, and the AC15 was a mass produced Chineese variant, so that explains some of it. But I also strongly believe that the extreme quality of Amalgam Audio's captures is a big factor. So, the conclusion: If a vox anp would be for you, you won't regret getting these capture sets!
